Spotty at Best: Brook Trout Exploit Large, Adult Spotted Salamanders in the Early Spring

چکیده

At temperate and boreal latitudes, seasonal transitions drive large fluxes in resource availability. For both terrestrial aquatic predators, pulses have the capacity to shape physiological ecological strategies. However, our ability detect seasonally dynamic trophic interactions is limited by logistical difficulty of year-round monitoring. Here, we document a novel, pulse freshwater predator across multiple lakes years: breeding spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) consumption brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). Better understanding prevalence impacts fish preying on adult amphibians will better inform amphibian conservation fisheries management moving forward. How High Can Brook Trout Jump? A Laboratory Evaluation of Brook Trout Jumping Performance

—Quantitative data on how high brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis can jump are crucial for efforts by fisheries managers to exclude brook trout from streams containing native cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarkii subspp. and to build effective fishways for brook trout migration. We identified factors that could influence brook trout jumping ability and demonstrated how this knowledge could be app...

Observations on the Etiology of Goitre in Brook Trout

The arrangement and number of the ponds and troughs, the water supply, the strain of brook trout, and their distribution in the ponds and troughs according to age, have remained unchanged since our first observations in 19o9. The crowding has gradually increased during these years, but the general external appearance of cleanliness of the ponds and troughs has not changed. Those containing the ...

The Status of Brook Trout Populations in Duncan Creek, Chippewa

Land acquisition along the stream for angler access, streambank protection and habitat improvement began in the early 1960s. In 1985, a master plan for the stream was approved and these lands were consolidated into the Duncan Creek Fishery Area. The fishery area covers Duncan Creek from its headwaters downstream to 190 Avenue, immediately above Lake Como. Approximately 7.8 miles of the stream t...

Comparison of Large and Small Visible Implant Tags: Retention and Readability in Hatchery Brook Trout

—Retention and readability of small (2.5 3 1.0 3 0.1-mm) and large (3.0 3 1.5 3 0.1mm) visible implant (VI) tags were compared among different size-classes (211–470 mm total length, TL) of hatchery brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis. Among smaller size-groups (,400 mm TL), retention of large tags (63–86%) 100 d after tagging was less than retention of small tags (89–97%). Overall retention of la...

Hydraulic Complexity Metrics for Evaluating In-Stream Brook Trout Habitat

A two-dimensional hydraulic model River2D was used to investigate the significance of flow complexity on habitat preferences of brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis) in the high-gradient Staunton River in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. Two 100-m reaches were modeled where detailed brook trout surveys 10–30-m resolution have been conducted annually since 1997. Spatial hydraulic complexity metr...
